DBC PACKAGING is head-quartered in Durban, South Africa.
It was formally established on 1st April 2001 when the ‘Wovens’ division of Durban Bag Company was acquired.

TIMELINE HISTORY

1937
1937

Durban Bag Company was originally established in 1937, specifically to manufacture hessian and cotton bags for the sugar and milling industries. From the mid-70’s onwards these fabric bags were gradually replaced by the new generation woven polypropylene bags.
2001 - 2007
2001 - 2007

Since 2001 our woven polypropylene bag business has grown tremendously. DBC Wovens is now a dominant supplier to the milling, fertilizer, sugar and animal feed industries throughout South Africa and the surrounding territories.

The four-man start-up team included Keith Parkinson, group MD and previous MD of Durban Bag; John Gerken, Durban Bag sales manager; Mike Koo, as production director, overseeing manufacturing operations at Isithebe; and Michael Parkinson as financial director.
In 2007, DBC introduced Fikza Investment Holdings, headed by Thuthukile Skweyiya, as its black economic empowerment partner, with a 25,1% shareholding.

2004

In 2004 DBC PACKAGING strategically diversified into polyethylene film packaging bags, pouches and FFS sheeting with a significant capital investment in the requisite plant and equipment. From its inception this operating division has traded as “DBC Plastics”.

From small beginnings, DBC Plastics has grown way beyond original expectations. In the past few years the company has invested heavily in all the latest equipment and technology to ensure that DBC Plastics’ quality and service levels remain of the highest standard. Our newest addition is the Reifenhauser 5-layer co-extruder. It has significant advantages over conventional three-layer films, including higher output, improved dart impact, improved puncture resistance and the option of using recycled material.

2009

In early 2009, a new Starlinger extrusion, tape-line and weaving plant was commissioned, allowing DBC Wovens to produce top-quality woven PP products . With a continued drive to stay ahead technologically, the recent commissioning of an eight-colour KYMC CI flexographic press has enhanced printing quality, particularly for BOPP laminated bags.
Following a recent R&D project, the division is also geared up to meet the needs of the one-ton bulk bag market.
2011
2011

Commissioned a Nordmeccanica laminator from Italy which complements the high-quality print of DBC’s flexible products supplied to the food industry. The most recent investment is a state-of-the-art Onyx 808 eight-colour gearless flexographic press from Uteco in Italy. With printing speeds up to 400m/min, the Onyx will greatly enhance DBC’s printing efficiencies and open up new markets.
